Orphan Rose is very happy with her life at the orphanage, but dreams of going to a good household to work as a maid. Unlike the other girls in St. Bridget's, she doesn't dwell on questions and dreams about her parents, and how she could be a lost princess or something the like. When she suddenly is taken away from the orphanage to work at the Fountain house, owned by the famous alchemist and magician Aloysius Fountain, she couldn't be happier. In the house surrounded by magic, a talking cat and two snotty upper-class children, she suddenly shows signs of magic herself. Without having the time to think much of it she is spiralled into a mystery of disappearing children and a possibly magical kidnapper.
The book and its story is very charming and cute. Rose being the unwilling heroine with sudden powers with circumstances noone can understand makes her and the other characters so loveable. If you are looking for a book of magic and adventure set in England, but not Harry Potter, you definitely should read this!
