The world has changed. Great Britain is now called Airstrip One, and is part of Oceania, and part of an ever-ongoing war with shifting enemies. Oceania is governed by The Party and at its head Big Brother, who may or may not exist, trying to quell individualism, or thoughtcrime.
The main character Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth, where his days are spent making propaganda and changing history, rewriting past newspaper articles so that the information always is in line with the Party's ideas. On the outside, he is a diligent worker, doing everything he's told, but on the inside, he hates the Party and Big Brother more than anything. Then he finds Julia.
The book features a nightmarish world with mass surveillance, hard core propaganda and a charismatic leader to controll it all. I think that the reason this book has gotten the status as a classic is because it really isn't very hard to imagine a world like this. For the reader who needs and wants a very thought provoking and heavy read.
